Originally constructed in 1917 by Arthur Brown for William and Agnes Bourn, Filoli Bell Tower in Woodside is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Tower suffered from water intrusion that led to wood rot and termites and was in need of a seismic retrofit to stabilize the structure. CAW Architects started by putting together drawings to help Filoli secure a National Trust grant to pay for its restoration. Working with a structural engineer, CAW determined what structural and wood repairs would be needed while still maintaining the key defining features of the historic belltower and the historic fabric. With Filoli Bell Tower’s historic past and future longevity in mind, our firm worked with the contractor to rebuild the tower and preserve its original detailing while improving the structural conditions within.
