>PROJECT INFORMATION
Since 2007, CAW has performed Master Plan Studies of several branches for the YMCA of Silicon Valley. These studies focused on ways to maximize use of space, update the buildings to better accommodate new programs and initiatives, and incorporate accessibility, new energy-efficient building systems, and sustainable finishes. From these studies, multiple projects emerged.
For the heavily-used Wellness Center at the Palo Alto Family YMCA, CAW restored the previously boarded-over windows and removed the existing suspended ceiling to reveal handsome glu-lam beams and exposed wood framing. New finishes, lighting, and a new mechanical system complete the refreshment of the space. In the Natatorium, ineffective acoustical banners were replaced with low-profile, mildew-resistant sound absorbing panels, and new indirect metal halide lighting provides even, bright illumination, drastically improving appearance and safety. Our work at the El Camino YMCA includes completely remodeled accessible men’s and women’s locker rooms, new family locker rooms, and new pilates and stretching rooms.
The YMCA of Silicon Valley moved their Association Offices into a 15,012 SF shell office building, requiring full infrastructure redesign. The building houses numerous departmental offices, various sized conference rooms, and a large training room for use by the entire Silicon Valley YMCA division. The existing brick and steel joist structure was transformed into an open and airy office environment by celebrating the exposed structure, adding multiple skylights and filtering light through the glass partitions of the perimeter offices. Because of the exposed structure, the infrastructure had to be carefully organized to conceal all mechanical ductwork and electrical and data paths above the dropped ceilings at the building perimeter, both to avoid visibility and to allow for ease of access for maintenance and repair. In addition, we surpassed the Y’s goal of achieving LEED certification for this project and are currently under review to achieve a Gold LEED rating. A crisp and professional materials palette proves welcoming to staff and visitors and is worthy of the mission of this well-established community organization.
