Located in East Oakland, Fremont High School has been challenged by low performance and low graduation rates. Beyond these academic hurdles, students here are faced with a community possessing high levels of recidivism, and lower economic achievement. To transform Fremont HS, OUSD turned to CAW to develop a comprehensive master plan to redesign their school.
Working with the District, CAW created a facilities master plan featuring smaller learning communities within a larger high school to enhance student performance. The goal of the Master Plan is to achieve Net Zero Energy: one of the highest levels of energy sustainability. Creating academically responsible environments together with environmentally responsible design will show the community that OUSD truly cares about their schools and students, ultimately promoting a lasting sustainability.
The master plan presented a range of solutions that explore options such as complete reconstruction or a combination of modernization and new construction to house 1,700 students.
